In 1984, former U.S. President Ronald Reagan designated both July and the third Sunday of that month as National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day, respectively. Since then, Americans have celebrated by indulging in their favorite flavors of ice cream throughout the month. This year, National Ice Cream Day was July 19.

As part of the celebration, many ice cream shops across the United States offer discounts and specials. For example, Cold Stone Creamery, an American-based customized ice cream chain, offers buy-one-get-one-free deals to those who sign up to become club members.
Also, Baskin-Robbins stores are giving free waffle cones to all customers who buy double or triple scoops on July 19-31.

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the most popular ice cream flavor among Americans has been vanilla for many years. The average number of ice cream pints an American buys each year is 48.
